Super Star Tanning finds a niche in Las Vegas: 24-hour tanning featuring new-to-market e3 line of tanning beds from ETS Tan

On their second of four vacations to Las Vegas last year, Kevin and Shannon Fleming noticed that for such a large city with a huge population, it was odd that no tanning salons were open around the clock. Back home in Texas, the couple had a membership to a 24-hour gym that had two tanning beds in the back. Due to her work schedule, some days Shannon Fleming couldn’t get to the gym or tan until late at night.

“That was such a convenience,” Shannon Fleming said. “We love Las Vegas and knew we wanted to move here, so we put our heads together to develop a good business plan and here we are today.”

Open nearly three weeks, Super Star 24-Hour Tanning is a 1,750-square-foot salon located about four miles off the Vegas strip. Its customer base has grown substantially week by week due to several factors, including special pricing packages offered on Facebook and its uniqueness in offering tanning 24 hours a day. But the biggest lure that has drawn new clients to Super Star 24-Hour Tanning has been the new tanning technology offered inside. The salon offers 10 new-to-market tanning beds by ETS Tan, the world’s largest manufacturer of tanning beds and tanning equipment. The new e3 line of beds feature the latest in energy-saving science, ergonomic design principles and eco-friendly lamp configurations. No other salon in Las Vegas offers the new e3 line of tanning beds.

e3 beds feature electronic ballasts that reduce energy consumption and can lower a salon’s operating costs by up to 30 percent. The beds operate at cooler temperatures, allowing salons to scale back air conditioning in the summer months, and use Wolff System lamps that contain less mercury, making them more easily disposable than non-green lamps.

The Flemings opened their salon with three Epic 242, three Ultimate Envy 134, one Legend 548 and one Legend 448 beds. Super Star Tanning also offers ETS Tan’s HP Velocity 1000, the Solar Force 652 stand-up bed and a California Tan Autobronzer. “No one in this area had seen these beds before and they’re shocked with their futuristic look, compact design and colorful appearance,” Kevin Fleming said. “Their bright lights fit Vegas and definitely increase our sidewalk appeal, something that definitely increases our bottom line.” Customers, he said, “are amazed by ETS Tan’s e3 beds long before they get inside. These beds are sleek, attractive and attention getting with their bright, moving lights. Once inside them, our customers have been overwhelmed with how well these beds perform and deliver a superior tan.

“We felt that other vendors were more expensive and offered lesser products,” he said. “Our experience with ETS Tan has been excellent. We’ve received outstanding customer service and advice as we opened our first salon and are extremely happy with the e3 line of tanning beds. So are our customers.”

During June’s 3rd annual West Coast Tanning Expo on June 14-15 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the Flemings are inviting expo attendees to visit Super Star Tanning and witness first-hand the power and style of the e3 tanning beds. A free shuttle will be available to take attendees from Caesars Palace to Super Star Tanning, just four miles off the strip. Refreshments, prizes and more will be offered at the salon.

Indoor Tanning Association responds to study results published today in ‘Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention’

From the Indoor Tanning Association
The results of a new study reported today in “Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention” are contradictory.

A study out just two weeks ago from the MD Anderson Cancer Center found that UVA light does not cause melanoma. Another study out this week claims that most sunscreens could actually promote the growth of skin cancers because they contain Vitamin A. A study from a research affiliate of the Harvard medical school found that tanning offers protection against melanomas. And, a number of other studies and experts also tout the cancer-fighting benefits of Vitamin D, which is produced by the skin with moderate UV exposure.

So clearly, lots of studies are reaching far different conclusions. These other findings may not be promoted to the media as actively as those who may have a specific agenda, but they show that science is still wrestling with this issue and there’s certainly still more to learn.

We at the Indoor Tanning Association welcome a more complete body of research that will allow us to advise our customers how to achieve their goals without unnecessary risk of over exposure. As for the study published in the  journal, the researchers averaged a group of people with the highest risk of melanoma (very fair skin and those with moles) with the general population and then concluded the risk applies to everyone. But it doesn’t.

Independent scientists have reviewed this study and noted that when you remove the high-risk groups, there may be a reduced risk for tanning bed users.

When you look at the greatest risk factors identified in this study, tanning isn’t even one of the top factors noted. The number of moles a subject had, how fair their skin was and the color of their hair were all stronger indicators of their risk of melanoma. And even if you were to accept their risk factors, their study says the risk is about 1 in 5,000 that someone might develop a melanoma. Other scientists believe the risk actually is far lower than that.

When reputable researchers are coming to vastly different conclusions, it’s clear that a lot more research is needed. As various legislative bodies consider this issue, the science on both sides of the question needs to be weighed before consideration is given to any sweeping policy changes. Any potential regulation that would affect millions of people who have tanned for years with no ill effects needs to consider all of the risk factors in a completely unbiased manner.

Miss Ohio Teen USA 2010 chooses tanning responsibility in moderation as a key platform during year-long reign

Bridget Linton is used to the spotlight. Her passion for Irish dancing has landed her on stages throughout the U.S., Ireland and Scotland. A high school cheerleader and homecoming queen, today she’s a freshman member of the dance team at the University of Akron while pursuing a major in broadcast journalism. She’s also Miss Ohio Teen USA 2010.

Crowned last October, Linton tours her state as a goodwill ambassador, making appearances at schools, guest speaking and working with charities including D.A.R.E., the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. One of her platforms during her year-long reign is responsible tanning and the health benefits gained from moderate exposure to UV rays.

“Moderate exposure to ultraviolet rays is the key to tanning responsibly,” she says. “The danger of a body’s exposure to UV rays comes when the skin gets burned and what can result from sunburn. Moderate exposure for people who can develop a tan is the smartest way to maximize the benefits of exposure and minimize risks.”

Linton will advise people of all ages during her reign to learn their skin type, find out how much exposure their skin can accept without burning, protect their skin with protective lotions and wear safe, protective eyewear. She’ll also help educate Ohioans about the benefits of UV exposure past simply getting a bronze glow on the outside.

“In the U.S., people are suffering from a serious vitamin D deficiency,” said Tim Freeman who owns Altima Tan and Massage in Akron. Freeman approached Linton shortly after she was crowned to help back her responsible tanning platform. “Research has proven that UV rays trigger the synthesis of vitamin D and are responsible for the health benefits of exposure. While one doesn’t have to develop a tan to produce vitamin D and everyone should avoid overexposure to prevent skin burn, which causes skin cancer, in reality tanning is a great way to stimulate the body’s production of vitamin D.”

Freeman’s salon, in business since 2007, tans on average 260 people a day. He is an ardent supporter of tanning in moderation and tanning responsibly. He and each of his five employees strictly follow critically important tanning guidelines developed by tanning industry leader ETS Tan, the International Tanning Association, Suntan Supply and the FDA.

“Salon services are in higher demand by a wide range of individuals than ever before,” he says. “As a business owner, I want to provide the best products and services at the best prices. But above all, I want to be a responsible, reputable business. Our top priority is to ensure that every customer who chooses to come in follows established tanning guidelines and most importantly follows recommended frequency and durations of sessions according to their skin type.”

New sleek and sexy tanning beds will be unveiled tomorrow at national trade show

1009_ETSTomorrow’s the big day – the day that ETS Tan unveils its new line of sleek and sexy tanning beds. ETS Tan is in Nashville, exhibiting at the Smart Tan Convention and Trade Show through Sunday and showcasing its new e3 line of tanning beds.

I can’t show you what the beds look like until tomorrow’s post both here and on ETS Tan’s Facebook Fan Page but I can share a little about what they look like and their features. I got to see one of the nine new beds last week and it looked awesome. The beds are smaller and more compact than ever before. They’re rounded and have very elegant curves. The beds have illuminated panels that can be programmed to change color and add movement to add ambiance to a salon. Outside the beds on the back, one access panel gives way to the vast majority of the bed’s electronics and internal components so beds don’t have to be taken apart when they require maintenance. And inside the beds, a new, scientifically engineered surface hugs a tanner’s body and virtually eliminates uncomfortable pressure on the body, making each session more comfortable and more enjoyable. Tanners can plug their MP3 players into any of the beds and enjoy their favorite songs without using earbuds.

e3 stands for energy-saving science, ergonomic design and easy maintenance, by the way. A huge focus was to make the new line of ETS Tan beds more energy efficient and green, more comfortable for tanners and easy for salon owners to maintain. I’ll share photos of what the beds look like and include their key features tomorrow after Noon EST here on our blog and on ETS Tan’s Facebook Fan page.
